11 plus exams

Basically, this is a test given to students when they reach the end of their primary school. In England, it is year 6 and in North Ireland, it is year 7. This examination is to determine whether the children are capable and suited for the grammar school or Independent school. Also, it was used predominantly used till the 1970s and since then, they have started to use a comprehensive education system. Still, there are certain authorities and schools that prefer to get the result of this examination for better performance of the students.

What do they provide?

The 11 plus exams are conducted to make the children get placed in the best schools they want. Along with this, there is a lot of advantage of taking this examination. Children who take these exams have better social mobility as they have a better track record and also be more successful in their careers. A recent study also concluded that students who took the grammar exam fared better than those who took the comprehensive type.

Getting trained for 11 plus

This examination takes place in September, which marks the beginning of year 6. The whole content of the exam will be based on each and different questions related to English, Maths, Verbal reasoning, and non-verbal reasoning. Basically, there are two main exams;

  • GL assessment that administers the exams for majority grammar schools in Berkshire, Bexley, Buckinghamshire, Devon, Gloucestershire, Kent, Shropshire, Walsall, Warwickshire, Wirral, and Wolverhampton.
  • CEM was developed by the Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring at Durham University. It works for Birmingham, Cumbria, Dorset, Lancashire, Medway, Northern Ireland, and Wiltshire. This contains verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, and numerical reasoning.

In both these exams, they give more prominence to English and mathematics. It includes spelling, punctuation, grammar, comprehension, vocabulary, arithmetic skills, problem-solving, and data manipulation.
